The 8th ACCP (Asian Conference on Clinical Pharmacy) 2008 "Toward Harmonisation of Education and Practice of Asian Clinical Pharmacy"
The 8th ACCP (Asian Conference on Clinical Pharmacy) annual meeting was held in Surabaya, Indonesia from 1 - 4 July 2008. 800 pharmacists and pharmacy students from 15 participating countries had a fruitful time strengthening ties and exchanging ideas with one another. They came from Australia, Canada, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, UK, USA and Vietnam.
Eight pharmacists represented Singapore in this event. The participating NUS faculties included Ms Lita Chew, Dr Alexandre Chan and Dr Joyce Lee together with graduate students Mr Kevin Yap and Ms YAP Kai Zhen. The conference was a great success with our pharmacists actively participating in every event.
Dr Alexandre Chan gave an informative plenary lecture, "Erythropoiesis Stimulating Agents in Cancer Anaemic Patients". The keynote speaker was Prof. Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, dean of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Pharmacy. Other distinguished clinical pharmacy speakers included Prof. Alan Lau of University of Illinois at Chicago and Prof. Robert Sindelar from University of British Columbia.
Graduate students Kelvin Yap and Yap Kai Zhen showcased their projects, "Drug Interactions Between Anticancer Drugs and Traditional Chinese Medicinal Herbs Used in Supportive Care Management" and "Review of Instruments to Measure Appropriate Prescribing of Medication in the Elderly", respectively with favourable responses.
Congratulations to Dr Joyce Lee and her final year project (FYP) student, Ms Tan Miao Ling, for winning first place in the 8th ACCP poster presentation. Their poster titled "Evaluation of Thiazolindinediones on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review" was selected from 139 posters.
In 2010, Ms Lita Chew and Dr Alexandre Chan will be bringing the 10th ACCP to Singapore in conjunction with the Asian Pacific Oncology Pharmacy Congress (APOPC). This is definitely an exciting time for pharmacists in Singapore, with one to proudly look back on and another to eagerly look forward to.
