NUS Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) Programme
For Enhanced Clinical Knowledge and Specialised Patient Care
A new postgraduate coursework programme that leads to the conferment of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree admitted its first cohort of students in Academic Year 2009/2010. Conceived and designed by NUS Department of Pharmacy faculty members, the programme aims to address the gaps in advanced clinical knowledge among pharmacists who hold basic degree in Pharmacy.
The main objective of this programme is to equip pharmacists with not only the knowledge, but also the skills, attitudes and values required to deliver high quality, consistent and safe medication therapies to patients in collaboration with other health professionals. The PharmD programme will provide one of the requirements for pharmacists to be on the new Pharmacist Specialist Register of the Singapore Pharmacy Council (Reference: Singapore Pharmacist Bill passed @ http://www.pharmacy.nus.edu.sg/news/). The first cohort of 5 students has obtained full sponsorship from the Ministry of Health and their hospital-employers.
This 2-year full-time programme comprises both didactic and clerkship components. It will build on the foundations laid during the undergraduate programme with focus on essential pharmacotherapy topics at greater depth, as well as broadening the students’ clinical pharmacy knowledge and skills in patient care.
The curriculum emphasises a patient-centred course of study and involves a structure that will enable the students to develop into reflective practitioners who possess leadership qualities, advanced expertise and clinical experience that will put them at the forefront of the Pharmacy profession. The PharmD graduates may also pursue advanced clinical and research training, such as residency, clinical fellowship, and/or research programmes in Singapore and overseas.
