Introduction
Pharmacists involved in the clinical care of patients need to be well-equipped with not only the knowledge, but also the skills, attitudes and values required to deliver high quality, consistent and safe treatments to patients in collaborative teams with other health professionals.
Clinical residency training is recognized in the United States of America for clinically oriented training to prepare residents to practice in patient-focused settings. Residencies provide an experience in depth experiential training for pharmacists to integrate pharmacy services, with the comprehensive needs of individual practice settings that lead to the acquisition of advance practice skills and knowledge. The outcome of residency training will enable the pharmacists to develop and enhance their clinical knowledge and skills by assuming patient-oriented roles in hospitals, community pharmacies, polyclinics and other patient care areas.
The residency programme builds upon knowledge and skills acquired in previous work experience and postgraduate education, enabling the resident to develop clinically, academically and professionally towards an area of specialist pharmacy practice.
The goals and objectives of this clinical pharmacy residency programme are aligned with the standards established by American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) for specialized residency training, as well as the supplemental standard and the following learning objectives:
