SEMINAR ANNOUNCEMENT

Application of Isothermal Microcalorimetry (the TAM) for Pharmaceutical Development

by

Dr. Peter Johansson
MSc in Chemical engineering, PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Lund, Sweden.
Currently, Product Manager / Application Specialist of Thermometric AB, Sweden.

on

Date: Thursday, 9th January 2003
Time: 1000 - 1100 hrs
Venue: S4-05-10

Coordinator : Dr CHAN Sui Yung

Synopsis:

Due to the fact that virtually all processes, physical, chemical, biological, are accompanied by an enthalpy change, isothermal microcalorimetry has become a method with a vast number of applications within a large number of sciences. In pharmaceutical development a number of applications has gained attention:

1. Interaction phenomena in solution, e.g. biomolecular recognition, interaction between drugs and release modifiers (e.g. cyclodextrins) etc.,
2. Stability of drugs (detection of slow decomposition reactions),
3. Compatibility of drugs and the components in a formulation,
4. Polymorphism (stability of meta-stable crystal structures), and
5. Quantitative determination of amorphous phases in highly crystalline materials, etc.

In this presentation a short description of the different microcalorimetric methods followed by application examples within the pharmaceutical field will be given.
