Synopsis:
The project aimed to culturally adapt and validate
the EQ-5D self-report questionnaire (EQ-5D), the Schizophrenia Quality
of Life Scale (SQLS) and/or the Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3)
and to study the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Singaporeans
with mental disorders. These instruments were translated/modified
to Singaporean languages and administered to Singaporeans with various
diseases. Psychometric properties were assessed in terms of feasibility,
validity, reliability, responsiveness and/or measurement equivalence.
HRQoL in patients with schizophrenia or anxiety disorders was compared
with that in other populations and factors influencing HRQoL were
identified using linear regression models. Generally, the EQ-5D,
HUI3 and SQLS appear to be feasible, valid and/or reliable instruments
in study populations. Singaporeans with schizophrenia or anxiety
disorders experience clinically important reductions in HRQoL and
both clinical variables and socio-demographics influence these patients'
HRQoL. In conclusion, extraneous HRQoL instruments can be useful
in Singapore after cultural adaptation and validation.
