Abstract:

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important public health problem with escalating prevalence, especially in Asia. DM exerts significant burden on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients. However, relatively little is known about how DM influences HRQoL among Asian patients. One of the reasons for this knowledge gap is the lack of HRQoL assessment tools with demonstrated cultural relevance, validity and reliability among Asians. Hence, in this thesis, we examined if there is an "universal" concept of HRQoL between Asian and Western cultures; evaluated the usefulness of several HRQoL instruments for use among Asians and studied the influence of DM and other sociodemographic and clinical factors on HRQoL of Asians.
