SP1203 Foundation in Effective
Communication (Faculty Requirement for Pharmacy students)
This module is designed to target at Pharmacy undergraduates
with the overall aim of helping them develop a higher level of
reading and writing accuracy, fluency and appropriateness in
different contexts of interaction.
The module emphases include fundamentals of higher order
thinking skills, synthesis and evaluation of information from
various sources and concise written communication for a range of
purposes. These objectives will be achieved through a variety of
pedagogical channels including seminars, lectures, group
projects and content related reading and writing assignments.
The module will include the following topics:
1) Principles of written communication relevant to health and
biomedical sciences.
2) Features of academic rhetoric pertinent to different
scenarios (eg. Thesis writing, lab report writing, writing for
scientific journals, writing for patient education).
3) Evidence-based persuasion / scientific argumentation (eg.
Evidence based medicine).
4) Scientific conventions in the documentation of sources.
5) Reporting and interpreting numerical data (eg. Results
from survey and scientific experiments)
6) Simplification of technical information for the lay people
(eg. Patient education materials)
